MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the South Middleton School District is to provide an education that empowers all students to achieve their potential and to become productive, responsible citizens.


THE COMMUNITY

The South Middleton School District is located in South Central Pennsylvania in Cumberland County.  The District is inhabited by approximately 13,000 residents, concentrated in a suburban/rural setting.  Boiling Springs is located five miles south of Carlisle and twenty miles southwest of Harrisburg near I-81.  Approximately 765 students attend grades 9-12 at the high school.


SCHOOL CALENDAR AND SCHEDULING

Boiling Springs High School functions on a semester basis and utilizes an intensive schedule model of class periods.  Each class period is 80 minutes in length.  Full unit classes meet every day for one semester.  One-half unit classes meet every other day.  The district operates on a six-day cycle during each semester.  At the end of the first semester, students begin a new schedule of courses for the second semester.


GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students in the Class of 2010 must earn 30 total units for graduation including:  4.5 units of English, 3.5 units of Math, 4 units of Social Studies, 3 units of Science, 2 units of same Foreign Language, 2 units of Arts/Humanities.  Personal Academic Computing (Microsoft Office), Physical Education, Health, Safety Education, and Personal Finance are required.  In addition, a Graduation Project requirement must also be satisfied.



GRADING SYSTEM

Numerical grades are assigned to all courses except Physical Education, Band and Chorus.  Letter grades are also given in gifted/learning support, independent study, co-op and internships.  Boiling Springs High School uses the following grading system:  A=93-100            B=85-92          C=77-84             D=70-76          F=below 70


CLASS RANK

Class rank is based upon a weighted cumulative average.  All courses with letter grades are excluded from class rank.  College courses taken during high school are also excluded.
