Curriculum Map: Math Third Grade

Description:

In Grade 3, instructional time should focus on five critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100 (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes; and (5) solving problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, money, liquid volumes, masses, and lengths of objects.

Strand: 1.0 Numbers and Operations-Base Ten

Content Strand: 1.1 Round two- and three-digit whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred
Content Strand: 1.2 Add two and three digit whole numbers (limit sums from 100 through 1,000), and/or subtract two and three digit numbers from three digit whole numbers
Content Strand: 1.3 Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Content Strand: 1.4 Order a set of whole numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least (up through 9,999

Strand: 2.0 Numbers and Operations-Fractions

Content Strand: 2.1 Demonstrate that when a whole or set is partitioned into y equal parts, the fraction 1/y represents 1 part of the whole and/or the fraction x/y represents x equal parts of the whole
Content Strand: 2.2 Represent fractions on a number line
Content Strand: 2.3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size
Content Strand: 2.4 Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions
Content Strand: 2.5 Express whole numbers as fractions, and/or generate fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers
Content Strand: 2.6 Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size
